Northwich Independent Retailers

Northwich Independent retailers first met in January 2011 as a result of growing concern for the sustainability of the town. Some of the anchor stores such as Woolworths had closed, rent and rates did not reflect the drop in footfall which had gradually got worse since 2008. Smaller business were closing due to the pressures and some resulted in bankruptcy There was no sign of a town plan or any obvious source of help, so the idea of an independent support group was formed.

Cllr Gaynor Sinar owner of Curtain Magic founded the group, which was well supported by an initial core group including Jack Gee Cycles, Rosebank Sports, Bruschetta, Crafty Stiches, The Sweet Shop, Gulio’s Italian restaurant, Antz in yer pants children’s clothes, Kanya, Gilroy Wilson Shoes. Stephanie Cheadle of Mid Cheshire Independent newspapers runs a monthly independents page, and Gina Bebbington of the Northwich Guardian also regularly reports the groups activities.

The membership has now grown to 58 members, who take part in events, the most popular being the Christmas tree initiative, where members can display a Christmas tree in a bracket with lights including fitting and removal at a competitive price, that literally light up the town.

We also run promotional events for Valentine’s Day, Easter, summer art trail and Bonfire night/Halloween, often with Northwich Town council, Cheshire West and Chester Council, local arts groups and interest groups.

In 2012 it was decided that a Town plan would be beneficial, and so some meetings were held at Café Terrazzo, which resulted in the formation of a map and a questionnaire from which a public consultation is due to go live in January 2014.

The group still meets weekly from 5.30 until 6.30, with the exception of August and December at anya Café Bar & Bistro, and is free to attend for all Northwich based Business.
